Leadership is improvisation

Leadership is improvisation

Leadership is an improvisational art. Vision, values, and a plan may guide you, but what you do cannot be scripted.

You must respond as events unfold. To use a metaphor, you have to move back and forth from the balcony to the dance floor.

While today’s plan may make sense now, tomorrow you’ll discover the effects of today’s actions and have to adjust.

Sustaining good leadership requires the capacity to see what is happening and to understand how today’s events will affect tomorrow’s plans.
